WCAG 2.1 Level AA

Accessibility Statement

Last reviewed: July 2026 · designmenu.ca

Design Menu is a web design and managed hosting business run by Michael Perks in Duncan, BC. Michael is low vision. Accessibility is not a box to tick here — it is a personal requirement, and every site we build is designed to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA as a baseline.

Our commitment

Design Menu targets conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA throughout this site. Where WCAG 2.2 introduces improvements over 2.1, we apply those as well.

This applies to designmenu.ca itself, and it shapes how we build every client site. Accessibility is always part of the deliverable — not an add-on.

What we have implemented

Specific measures in place on designmenu.ca:

  • Skip to main content — the first focusable element on every page, allowing keyboard and screen reader users to bypass navigation (WCAG 2.4.1)
  • Semantic HTML5 landmarks<nav>, <main>, <footer>, and <section> used correctly throughout
  • Visible focus indicators on all interactive elements — a styled outline, not the browser default, on every link and button
  • Keyboard-navigable mobile menu — focus moves to the close button when the drawer opens, is trapped within the drawer while open, and returns to the trigger on close
  • Colour contrast of at minimum 4.5:1 for all normal text; primary body text targets 7:1 (AAA)
  • Inline links are underlined in article and long-form content — distinguishable without relying on colour alone (WCAG 1.4.1)
  • Meaningful alt text on all images; decorative elements use aria-hidden="true"
  • Animations respect prefers-reduced-motion — all transitions are suppressed for users who prefer reduced motion
  • Content reflows at 400% browser zoom without horizontal scrolling (WCAG 1.4.10)
  • Page language declared on every page (lang="en")
  • Unique, descriptive page titles on every page (WCAG 2.4.2)
  • Logical heading hierarchy — h1 through h3 in order, never skipped
  • Self-hosted fonts only — no third-party font CDN requests that could fail or introduce privacy concerns

Known limitations

We are not aware of any current WCAG AA failures on this site. Automated testing catches a subset of issues; manual testing covers the author's own use cases but may not cover every configuration of assistive technology. If you find a barrier, please tell us.

Reporting a problem

If you encounter anything on this site that is not accessible to you — a page that does not work with your screen reader, content that is hard to read, a navigation problem, or anything else — please contact Michael directly.

Accessibility in client work

Every website we build for clients is built to the same standard. Accessible markup, sufficient contrast, keyboard navigation, and semantic HTML are part of every deliverable — not optional extras.

If you are a business owner who needs to know your website meets accessibility requirements — including under the BC Accessibility Act — we can help. Get in touch.
